The Hoover House is a historic home located in the Peacock Addition neighborhood of Bell Buckle. Perhaps it’s the skilled craftsmanship of its construction or maybe it’s all of the memories made here, but the Hoover House has remained a steadfast Bell Buckle antiquity.
This home is located on what was once the large estate of William J. Peacock. In 1903, after he and his wife Katherine passed, their 200 acres were divided into town lots and sold off. Lots #18, 19, and 20 were purchased by the Peacock’s daughter Kate and her husband Dr. William C. Hoover. The house was built on lot #20 between 1903 and 1906.
William C. Hoover and Kate Peacock were married in 1886 at her family’s homestead located just across the street from where her future home would be. William was a local physician and Kate was a social butterfly that often hosted luncheons and other gatherings in her home. They raised their two sons here. William passed suddenly in 1908 at the age of 52. Kate continued to live here until her death in 1933.
It was passed down through the Hoover family like a cherished family heirloom. In fact, the Hoover family’s tenure in this home stretched more than 75 years! Some long-time locals remember Mrs. Clarice Hoover living here. She was a teacher at the Bell Buckle School only steps away from her front door.
The house has many historic features inside that truly feel like stepping back in time. To the left as you walk in, there are big, beautiful pocket doors. Soaring ceilings, beautiful fireplaces with gorgeous old tile surround, and rich woodwork throughout. It has been renovated over time, expanding the living spaces. Most recently a bathroom was added and the kitchen updated, but all of its character remains.
A true southern Victorian and a jewel in Bell Buckle’s crown. Here’s to 120 more life-filled years for the historic Hoover House.
